Private jet or business class?

A private jet is not much faster than an airliner. The decisive edge is on the ground: departure from a business airport near the centre, boarding fifteen minutes before take-off, no check-in or connection. On short and medium trips, that reclaimed time changes the whole day.

Two things truly set private apart. First, multi-city in a day: three meetings in three cities and home by evening, unachievable on scheduled airlines. Second, privacy: the cabin becomes a meeting room, away from prying eyes. For a team or a leader, it is a productivity tool, not a luxury.

Let us be honest: on a long, direct, well-served flight — Paris-New York on a scheduled airline, say — first class offers excellent comfort-to-price, and the total-time gap narrows. Private regains the edge as soon as you need a poorly served destination, a fixed schedule, multiple stops or privacy. It is a case-by-case trade-off.

The comparison is not about cruise speed, similar between a jet and a long-haul airliner, but about door-to-door time. Private: arrive fifteen minutes ahead, no queue, no connection, land often closer to the destination. Commercial: transfer to a large hub, check-in, security, waiting, sometimes a stopover. On a regional trip, the gap easily reaches two to three hours.

Beyond time, private flying offers what scheduled service cannot: full control of the schedule — leave when ready, push back if a meeting runs long — a confidential environment suited to work, and a cabin matched to the group and luggage. For a team or family travelling together, these gains compound and change the very nature of the trip.

Let's be honest: scheduled flights keep their use cases. On a transoceanic long-haul in business class, the price-comfort ratio is hard to beat for a lone traveller. Very large capacities, ultra-frequent routes and tight budgets also lean commercial. Private takes the lead on regional trips, groups, tight schedules and poorly served destinations — where door-to-door time savings and flexibility truly change the equation.

Let's be clear: a private flight emits more per passenger than a full airliner. That is a fact, not an argument to dodge. Reducing the impact comes through right-sizing the aircraft, using empty legs that would have flown anyway, and offset programmes offered by operators. Private flying is justified when time savings, flexibility or access to a poorly served destination meet a real need — not as a default reflex.
